Art of Remembrance showing at Te Papa

The stunning Art of Remembrance project, which covered the face of St David’s Church in Khyber Pass in 2015 over the Anzac Day period, is now showing at Te Papa, for Anzac Day 2016.

The brass quatrefoils artworks by leading NZ artist Max Gimblett, who has had a life-long association with St David’s, have been a major fundraiser for the Friends of St David’s Trust.

Over $500,000 has been raised so far, with more quatrefoils still to sell. Plans for the funds include earthquake strengthening and long-neglected maintenance, and to explore redevelopment of the church as a community facility.

The opening of the exhibition at Te Papa on 16 March 2016 was a moving occasion, including a powhiri and blessing by tangata whenua, and addresses by Te Papa art curators, representatives of the NZ Defence Force and the Engineers’ Corps, and the project director Paul Baragwanath.

The exhibition will run for the next three months.
