News
News of interest to members of Civic Trust Auckland is obtained from a variety of sources including newspapers, periodicals, the websites, of kindred and other organisations and first hand contact with various parties, by Civic Trust Auckland board members and others.
Where we are supplied with news cuttings, every effort is made to discover the source and date.
News details are accumulated daily and added to the section for the month. Lack of available manpower means that coverage must be limited and not all news items can be included. Furthermore, a change in methodology late last year has improved the collection process and will be noted that from this time on, the monthly news sections have increased in size.

This news section is posted monthly and is of particular interest, not only for the individual items which are covered, but also for the various matters which rouse public interest (often indignation) from time to time. A study of news items during 2006 for example, shows the extreme indignation felt by many people over the removal of trees in Queen Street, as well as the rather shocking attempt by politicians to bulldoze legislation for an expensive "white elephant" stadium on the Auckland waterfront, without recourse to normal planning principles.
Past monthly news items are still being added to from time to and the period covered in this section of the website will eventually go back several years. To open the news section for any particular month, go to the appropriate year in the left hand column and click on the month, for which news is being investigated.
News items are presented, either as main headlines, indicating that a subject has been deemed, by the compiler, to be worthy of note, or in summary form, where further details from the original story are given. Where a note has been introduced the term note is shown in bold, to show that the news compiler has introduced some personal comment or provided additional relevant information. Every effort is made to ensure that any summary of a news item correctly interprets the intention of the original author. Notes added express the opinion of the compiler (a board member) and therefore, as far as possible, the probable overall opinion of the Civic Trust Auckland board.
News items included in the monthly summary would normally be of a local, or regional nature, reflecting the fact that Civic Trust Auckland has local and regional interests. However, some international and a number of national news items will be included from time to time, as being of interest to members and site visitors.
Please feel free to contact us over any news item we may have overlooked, or given a mistaken or erroneous summary.
Please also feel free to adopt a subject from the news, whether topical, or not as the basis for an essay which can be produced in our essays section.
A time line is being developed, which will cover events of interest to members which have taken place since the founding of Auckland in 1840. This is a very big project, for which research volunteers are being sought. The time line from recent years will, in part, be based on our monthly news section. The time line will differ from the time lines presented by some other organisations, in order to concentrate on matters likely to be of interest to members. Such matters will include, for example, the completion dates of various historic and other buildings, dates when various parks were established, books published, various other matters, and important events in the history of Civic Trust Auckland.
