Sub-Committees
The following sub-committees are active:
| Volcanic Features Protection |
|
| |
Margaret Barriball |
| |
Munroe Graham (chair) |
| |
Carol Sanders |
This is a very big and ongoing project, which began when Munroe noticed, from a press release, that the proposed new four lane highway through the quarry site at Maungarei/Mt Wellington would pass directly through the remnant and site of Te Tauomo/Purchase Mt, just north of Homestead Drive. Representations were immediately made to Council to divert the road and create a reserve around the site of this now largely demolished volcano.
Civic Trust Auckland is joined in its efforts by the Geological society, the Volcanic Cones Society, Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki Trust, a local Iwi and many individuals. As at August 2006, it seems that a small park may indeed now be the result.
Civic Trust Auckland is concerned that a number of other volcanic features are at risk and has made submissions followed by ongoing negotiations concerning:
| |
Crater Hill, Papatoetoe |
| |
McLaughlan Mt and stone fields, Wiri |
| |
Te Hopua (Gloucester Park), Onehunga. |
| |
Various features in the South Auckland field |
| |
Wiri Mt
|
There is a case for the possible reinstatement of some volcanoes which have been lost, including portions of the above.
| Other candidates could be: |
|
| |
Three Kings |
| |
Maungataketake |
| Purewa Valley Protection |
|
| |
Roy Clements (Chair) |
| |
Brian Bartley |
| |
Carol Sanders |
This largely treed valley includes the Purewa creek and the Orakei Basin. It is subject to a motorway designation (the Eastern Bypass), last costed at around $4bn, about 2004 and then apparently for only two lanes each way, doomed to gridlock from day one.
The valley and basin have early settler historic connections, as the sea was the only practical access initially available to the North Remuera and Meadowbank hinterland. In particular, it was the main access for the development of the St Johns College complex. It is also of botanical, ecological and Maori cultural interest.
To date, nobody has clearly demonstrated how residents within the Eastern suburbs would access the proposed highway and therefore how it could be of benefit to commuters. Council planners have long held the view that traffic into and out of the city should be discouraged.
| 23 Alten Road |
|
| |
Carol Sanders (chair) |
| |
Dave Pearson |
| |
Munroe Graham |
This historic building, located on land owned by the University, is administered by
Civic Trust Auckland. A superbly researched history has been produced (August 2006) and the intention is to convert that document into book form for publication in the near future.
Rental income, plus further valuable assistance from the Auckland City Council, goes towards repairs, maintenance and documentation.
| Auckland Heritage Fund |
|
| |
Bryan Bartley |
| |
Carol Sanders |
This fund is in an interest bearing account. An appropriate project, or (more likely) series of projects, is yet to be decided. The fund will be spent in a way which reflects the aspirations of the now disbanded Auckland Heritage Trust.
| Myrtle Miller Endowment |
|
| |
Roy Clements |
| |
Carol Sanders |
| |
Munroe Graham |
The fund is in an interest-bearing account in the first item of expenditure will be to publish a book on Partington's mill. Munroe Graham is editor and part author and has now accumulated all necessary data, so that a draft should be produced during 2008.
Single purpose bequests of this type are greatly appreciated and add considerably to our knowledge of historical and built heritage, within the Auckland region. Partington's Mill is a prime example of the loss of industrial heritage, in this case also (more importantly) the loss of an iconic landscape feature.
| Kinder House |
|
| |
Carol Sanders |
| |
Munroe Graham |
The purpose of this subcommittee is to liaise with the Kinder house trust in the operation of Kinder house and the use of part of that building by
Civic Trust Auckland as its headquarters and for board meetings. The building itself is of course historic and an excellent example of period architecture in rare stonework. It is also an art gallery and museum, detailing the life and times of John Kinder and his art works.
Watching Briefs
In addition to the above, various board members observe "watching briefs" in respect of a number of current and future development projects (in no particular order).

Interest in the various matters set out above is not limited to those board members named, nor is the list comprehensive. It does however indicate the wide range of interests of board members and the huge variety of subjects which require virtual "day to day" contemplation by
Civic Trust Auckland.
Some of these watching briefs will develop into full sub-committees and others will spawn books, booklets or brochures.
Civic Trust Auckland keenly seeks member and public input into current or future projects where watching briefs or sub-committees should be active.
