Leys Institute to close indefinitely due to earthquake risk

The Leys Institute in St Mary’s Bay was closed yesterday with one day’s notice.

The buildings, designed in the Edwardian Baroque style and built in 1905/6 and are Listed as Category 1 by Heritage NZ and scheduled as Category A by Auckland Council.

Together the buildings have provided the community with library and gymnasium facilities continuously for over a century.

The closure is at this stage indefinite, and the reason cited was earthquake risk, although further detail was not immediately available.
