Donovan Rypkema Heritage Strategies International
Donovan Rypkema is president of Heritage Strategies International, a firm based in Washing DC which works at the nexus of heritage conservation and economics to provide catalytic information to public and NGO clients. Donovan has worked with communities in 49 US States and more than 45 countries.
Donovan last visited New Zealand in November 2010 as the guest of the then New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
Within the context of the Auckland Unitary Plan, Donovan will share his experience and understanding of the issues and opportunities around the adaptive reuse of heritage, and address such matters as seismic strengthening and the incentives for heritage preservation.
Donovan’s book, The Economics of Historic Preservation: A Community Leader’s Guide, is now in its third edition and is widely used by practitioners around the world.

Donovan was educated at Columbia University, where he received a Master of Science degree in Historic Preservation.
He is author of various publications including Community Initiated Development, The Economics of Rehabilitation, and Feasibility Analysis of Historic Buildings and The Economics of Historic Preservation:
Through his domestic firm PlaceEconomics, Donovan has provided consulting services to the US National Trust for Historic Preservation and its National Main Street Center for the past three decades. In 2012 the Trust awarded him the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award, the organisation’s highest honour, for his work in the preservation field.
International clients of Heritage Strategies International have included the World Bank, the Inter American Development Bank, the Council of Europe, the United Nations Development Programme, Europa Nostra and the European Heads of Heritage Forum.
