- Mission Bay
For more than a century, the Hauraki Gulf Tīkapa Moana been pummeled by overfishing, sedimentation, and destructive bottom fishing methods like trawling. Join Greenpeace and Forest & Bird at a special event to show your heart for the Hauraki.
Boaties, paddleboarders, kayakers and ocean lovers will gather on the water and create a powerful, vibrant image to show decision makers that people want bottom trawling banned from the Hauraki Gulf. Bottom trawling destroys habitats, kills wildlife, and decimates tipa scallop beds.
If you’d like to bring your vessel down on the day, please register it here. If you don’t have a vessel, on the beach at Mission Bay there will be some fun, ocean-themed festivities.
You can share the Facebook event far and wide.
NB Due to the weather, this event has been postponed from Sat April 15 to Sat April 22, and has again been postponed until 10am Sunday 23 April
The event will happen on Sunday even if the weather isn’t fine enough for on-water activities. Plan B is to gather on the beach with big beautiful ‘Ban Bottom Trawling’ banners.
A call will be made on Friday as to whether the on-water action will go ahead, so make sure you’ve registered your vessel to receive updates.
