Progress with the Leys Institute

Temporary repairs have been made to the various roof leaks and the outdoor lighting has been reinstated.  Security cameras have now been installed, offering better protection from vandalism. The interior has been stripped out and some investigative work has been done, in preparation for the main restoration.

The resource consent was approved last month, and the building consent is on track for finalisation later in the year. Building work is scheduled to start in July 2026. Council staff will be providing a full project update to the Waitematā Local Board at their September meeting.

There is still a need for the local board to sell assets to help fund the project, as council funds are for the seismic strengthening only.

As this is an election year, please take the opportunity to advocate for the Leys heritage buildings.
