Remuera Station gets critical restoration funding

The Remuera train station – one of the most significant remaining suburban railway buildings in New Zealand – is getting key restoration funding after a long delay. The Albert-Eden Local Board provided a community grant for restoration work at the station in 2019, but these funds were not used and the project stalled. However, the work is now going ahead, and will be carried out by Auckland Transport.

The works will strengthen and weatherproof the exterior of the signal box and station building, and remove, refurbish, and reinstate all the timber-framed windows. The station building will undergo a full exterior refurbishment, and it is hoped that full restoration, including the interior, will take place at a future date.

The station is almost in in original condition. It was opened in 1873 and was initially a stop on the Auckland-Onehunga railway. The design is an island station, and the signal box is one of only two in New Zealand that is original.
