Caring for the environment in Howick

Howick is known for its mix of waterways, coastal areas, and green spaces, making it one of Auckland’s most vibrant and ecologically rich communities. These are four initiatives the Howick Local Board supports to care for their local environment.

Pest-free Howick Ward

This is a neighbourhood-led programme that brings schools, families, and volunteers together to tackle pest plants and animals that threaten native birds, streams, and reserves. It includes the annual Moth Plant Pod Competition that sees thousands of invasive seeds removed. There are also bat‑watching evenings in Point View Reserve.

Construction Waste Illegal Dumping project

This project includes cameras in key hotspots, combined with a trial of AI detection, to help spot offenders in real time so council teams can respond quickly, and weekly monitoring and reporting to enforce the Litter Act and Solid Waste Bylaw.

Tāmaki Estuary Waterways Collective

The programme works with local businesses to reduce sediment, to remove pest trees, and to control weeds.

Construction Waste Enforcement and Leadership

Local builders and developers are learning cleaner, smarter ways to run their sites:

  • with silt and security fences
  • reducing polystyrene, concrete run-off, and plastics
  • weekly monitoring.
