Litter in Aotearoa is a huge problem, but there’s very little data available on where our litter hotspots are, or what type of litter is the most problematic.

Backyard Battle is a Keep New Zealand Beautiful citizen science programme which aims to help identify the origins of litter and to contribute to a better understanding of litter’s pathway.

Volunteers from across the country are needed to collect data on litter. The data will contribute to growing our national knowledge base about the type, location and density of litter in Aotearoa, and how it makes its way from the land to the ocean through our waterways.
