A Greenpeace investigation in 2018 revealed that New Zealand’s plastic rubbish was being shipped off to countries in Southeast Asia – and it’s still happening.
Over 98,000 metric tonnes of our plastic waste has been exported to since January 2018. More than 46,000 tonnes of it has been shipped to Malaysia and Thailand.
Plastic that we put in the recycling bin is destroying the lives of the communities who have to live with our waste, exposing them and their environment to harm caused by dumping or incineration and by the resulting microplastics.
