Two CTA members joined a small group at Mutukāroa Hamlin Hill for an event for World Ranger Day on 31 July. This regional park is one of the more central parks, being accessed at 1014 Great South Road, Penrose.
Kit Howden from Friends of Regional Parks talked about the work of rangers, including that of the two Auckland Council rangers who attended the event. We were later shown by them how to weed around the little trees that had recently been planted there and we helped to install barriers to deter rabbits.
World Ranger Day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate rangers killed or injured in the line of duty and to celebrate the work they do to protect the planet’s natural treasures and cultural heritage. See https://www.
What do rangers do in Auckland? They enable safe and enjoyable outdoor recreation and education experiences in regional park settings, while conserving and protecting natural wildlife and cultural heritage resources. They work alongside contractors, manage volunteers to complete practical work in the parks, like animal pest control operations, weed treatment, nursery work, and farming.
