The Government’s emissions reduction policies are looking inadequate as the Climate Change Commission warns there are significant risks that New Zealand will not meet our second and third emissions reductions budgets out to 2035. Even achieving our first emissions reduction budget to 2025 is not guaranteed. The Minister of Climate Change is legally required to ensure that the budgets are met. Failure to do so brings significant litigation risk.
The warning demonstrates an urgent need to strengthen climate change policy. Last month, in an Open Letter to the Prime Minister, EDS called for stronger action on climate change mitigation. Read their letter here.
