The windows of St David’s Memorial Church in Khyber Pass Rd were ceremonially lit up on the eve of Anzac Day at a very moving event, organised by the Friends of St David’s Trust.
Opening with a procession by soldiers and a piper, the attendees heard from church authorities, the Chair of the Friends Trust, Councillor Mike Lee, and from local MP Nikki Kaye, who ceremoniously turned the lights on.
Heritage architect Graeme Burgess gave a short outline of the significance of the various stained glass windows, and also conducted a walking tour around the church after the ceremony.
Two choirs entertained the crowd of several hundred, and a highlight was a rendition of The Last Post on a 100 year old bugle by a young student.
Anzac biscuits and hot drinks supplied by volunteers were welcomed by the crowd.
