Unitary Plan backlash for Council

Auckland Council’s recent upzoning out-of-scope submissions, further to the original notified plan in 2013, have been raising concerns throughout suburban Auckland.

The increased intensification is considered a breach of natural justice, as people who did not put in a submission to the original notified plan have no ability to participate in the process. The only redress is to appeal to the Environment Court, with huge costs, after the Plan is notified.

The Hearings Panel has indicated that they will consider issues of natural justice when hearing the 080/081 Zoning submissions.

Public meetings arranged by Auckland 2040 have resulted in pressure on councillors to withdraw the out-of-scope upzoning submissions.

Mayor Len Brown has convened a special meeting of the full council on Wednesday 24 February to debate the issue. Auckland 2040, Local Board chairs, Character Coalition and other interested parties may address the meeting.

Auckland 2040 is encouraging residents to email their local councillors and Local Board representatives.
