Our first Winter Lecture for 2015 was held on Sunday 12 July.
Civic Trust Board member architect Julian Mitchell from Mitchell Stout Architects presented on the redevelopment of the scheduled heritage Lopdell House, and the construction of the new Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery, linked to the older building.
Julian followed his presentation with a tour of the reinstated roof terrace, with stunning views over the Manukau. We then toured the new gallery to see the light-filtering effects, the magnificent rear hanging glass-box staircase, and the elliptical-shaped main staircase, which echoes the curves of the Lopdell House staircase.
The group then retired to the Deco Eatery in Lopdell House for coffee and refreshments.
Mitchell & Stout Architects is on the short list for a culture award at the World Architecture Festival Awards for the new Te Uru Gallery, to be announced in Singapore in early November.
