A record-breaking 105,000 people cast their vote for their favourite manu in the  Bird of the Year vote run by Forest & Bird.

Karure from Rēkohu Chatham Islands are a conservation success story. In 1980, just five birds were left, one of them the only fertile female. The Chathams community and the Wildlife Service (later, the Department of Conservation) turned that around, with a single breeding pair, Old Blue and Old Yellow. There are now around 350 adult birds living on two pest-free nature reserve islands.

More than 80% of our native manu are in some or serious trouble. Each vote in Bird of the Year is a chance to learn more about the birds that live here with us.
