New Heritage NZ website with historic places to visit

Heritage New Zealand has created a new website that will help you find, visit and enjoy some of Aoteaora New Zealand’s wonderful historic places, along with a diverse range of heritage-themed road trips and itineraries for you and your whānau.

These heritage places are diverse and fascinating, in rural settings and in cities, with lawns for picnics, and family-friendly guides and activities.

Visit the birthplace of the famous Ka Mate Haka at Opotaka, the location of the largest signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi at Māngungu Mission, sites of industry and innovation at Te Waimate, Hayes Engineering, Totora Estate and Clarks Mill. Hear inspiring tales of extraordinary women at the home of suffragist Kate Sheppard in Christchurch and learn how widowed mother of seven, Jane Takotowi Cochrane’s, saved Clendon House from debt, or cycle Wellington’s rugged coastline to Pencarrow Lighthouse where in the 1860s Mary Bennet was the first and only female lighthouse keeper in Aotearoa.
