Restoration of the Leys Institute – update

John Cheah, council project manager, has advised that the resource consent application is working its way through council processes.

  • Following a break-in several months ago, the rear door and courtyard door have been boarded up.
  • Now the only access to the library is via the front door.
  • The grounds have been tidied up and Ventia is on notice to keep them maintained satisfactorily.
  • The library building has been emptied in readiness for the temporary roof leak repairs, due to start by the end of June.
  • The design team is well into the detailed design work and on track to submit for building consent at the end of this year.

The full restoration won’t start until the end of 2026, with the building reopening scheduled for 2028.
