Throughout the year, Auckland Council and its community partners plant hundreds of thousands of native plants to protect and restore our waterways. A new trial on the North Shore in Wairau Valley is testing a Swiss-engineered technology to reduce sediment from stormwater ponds. It aims to lower carbon emissions and has the potential to reduce sediment going to landfill by a massive 60 per cent.

In Mahurangi, six years of ongoing restoration work has significantly improved stream health with a 30% reduction in sediment entering waterways. Monitoring of the streams between 2023 and 2025 compared open pasture streams with fenced and planted waterways, as well as streams flowing through native forest. Results show that restoration work has meant healthier waterways, land and harbour ecosystems in the Mahurangi catchment area.
