CTA’s event in this year’s Auckland Heritage Festival was a talk about city centre heritage pubs by our president, Allan Matson, in the Shakespeare Hotel on the afternoon of Saturday 26 September. Allan’s generously illustrated talk showed many of the hundreds of places where one could get a drink in early Auckland, and he described the history of some of these heritage buildings.
The 50 people or so who attended the talk were given a copy of the CTA brochure Heritage Pubs in Central Auckland, which includes a map and brief descriptions of 11 city centre pubs where you can still get a drink. In addition to The Shakespeare, they are:
The Empire
The Albion
Father Ted’s
The Bluestone Store (not open unless booked for a function)
The Occidental
Vultures Lane
The Queen’s Ferry
Hotel De Brett
Slattery & Sons
The Northern Steamship Company
Five more central city pubs feature in the brochure, as well as four hotels that have either been demolished or are under threat.
